Situated in the leafy bay-side suburb of Sandy Bay is this 60 bed ageing-in-place facility which has won several national awards for excellence in care as well as architectural design.
As part of Sandown Village this premier location is a short walk to a thriving shopping centre with a variety of restaurants and the beach.
Elegant and sophisticated furnishings and fittings complement the ambience of the spacious living and dining areas. Individual rooms are generously proportioned with ensuite bathroom and the convenience of kitchenette facilities.
The facility is privileged to have small lounge rooms, each located in the residential wings with lovely garden views. Each area is multipurpose and is used for both specific purposes as well as being available for socialising or private functions/dining. Fitted with a kitchenette, each area has tea/coffee making facilities and comfortable furnishings.
The library is one such area, housing over 1000 books in both large and normal print, magazines and the convenience of the daily newspaper.
The main lounge room is located in a central position within the facility and boasts a grand piano and large windows to take in the breathtaking view of the Derwent River. Adjacent to this is the main dining room, an expansive area which maintains a café feel from the positioning of small exclusive tables. The aptly name Garden Room lies adjacent, suitable for dining with privacy and/or small group activities. This area has been developed with relaxation and sensory objectives in mind.
The facility houses the serene St Augustine's Chapel which hosts interdenominational services and is open for quiet spiritual reflection at any time that the resident and/or their family may need.
The gardens of the facility lay at the rear, ensuring maximum privacy and quietness. This is also a secured area which maximises the resident's safety. The area is fully paved with level access and comfortable garden furniture. Raised garden beds are provided together with room-side garden areas which encourages a sense of community involvement and enjoyment.
The ground level of the facility includes various additional meeting/function spaces. An Internet Café and Broadband for Seniors network is located here, with a complimentary onsite advice team available for enquiries.
A well stocked mobile shopping trolley is provided nearby in a central location and ensures those who find access to nearby shops difficult are able to avail themselves of purchasing items of choice.
The hydrotherapy pool and spa is also located on the ground floor. A specialised team is utilised to assess and facilitate your safety in using these facilities for both relaxation and exercise.
The Sandown Wellness Centre is also on site to assist with your physical and emotional wellbeing. Conducted in conjunction with the allied health team it offers therapies to ease the mind, body and soul in a friendly and aesthetically pleasing environment. Sandown Apartments was proud to receive a Highly Commended Award as part o the 2013 ACST Aged Care Organisation Awards for this initiative.
There are close links between the Independent Living Unit residents and the Residential Care Facility and a community centre for the use of all residents is located at the Sandy Bay Road end of the complex.
The main building is fully air-conditioned by geothermal energy. The heat source is the return wastewater from Selfs Point wast treatment plant. It is thought to be the first residential facility in the world using return wastewater as its geothermal source.
In 1999 Sandown Village won all four of the Tasmanian Building Industry Awards for which it was eligible. These awards are made annually by the Master Builders Association of Tasmania as recognition of excellence. It was the first time that one project has won four of the major awards in one year. In addition, the complex was awarded the Minister's Award for Excellence as the best low care facility in Australia.
