Meet Norman Mackmillan

Welcome back to our Meet the Resident articles. Introducing you to some of the wonderful residents who live in our homes across Tasmania, and sharing their stories.

Growing up in Scotland where he married his sweetheart in 1957 (64 years in March 2021!), Norman started as a Navy Cadet at 16 years of age, ultimately qualifying as a Master Mariner. Realising however that a life at sea was not the best option for raising a family, Norman found a position in Hobart in 1960 and so left Scotland with his family to settle in Australia.

‘It wasn’t a good job!’ says Norman, but the move all worked out in the end, as they raised three beautiful children in their new home “down under”.

After a long career in the military and public service, including time serving in Vietnam during the war, Norman retired to run his own business, only moving into Guilford Young Grove in August last year.

Norman says it’s very nice at Guilford Young Grove; the staff are delightful and he has a pleasant room with a nice view. He also appreciates the way modern technology (such as his iPad) allows him to talk to his children from a distance in today’s modern world.
