Former Premier Ray Groom retires as Chairman of Southern Cross Care Tasmania

Former Premier Ray Groom retires today as Chairman of Southern Cross Care Tasmania after 12 years in the position.

“after 16 years on the Board and 12 years as Chairman it was time to hand over the reins” Mr Groom said.

Mr Groom said it had been a privilege to lead Southern Cross Care through a period of great activity and incredible growth.

He noted that the organisation had more than doubled in size since he became Chairman in 2006. In that period the size of the annual budget had increased from $30M to $85M, staff numbers from 600 to almost 1200 and gross assets from $109M to $316M.

He said that most importantly the quality of care Southern Cross Care provides remains at a very high standard.

Mr Groom added that at the date of his retirement he was very pleased that the organisation was in very good shape to continue to succeed and meet all future challenges.

On Monday the 25th June 2018 the Board elected Mr Stephen Shirley as the new Chairman of Southern Cross Care Tasmania.

Mr Shirley is a former Senior Financial Manager at several State Government Departments. He is also a past President of the Hobart Rotary Club. Mr Shirley has been on the Board for 5 years and has been Chairman of the Major Projects Committee of Southern Cross Care Tasmania. Mr Groom said Mr Shirley is an excellent choice and would provide strong and capable leadership of the organisation into the future.
